Vessel Safety Checks

The Vessel Safety Check is a free and complimentary inspection of your boat.

In approximately 30 minutes, a Vessel Examiner will thoroughly check your boat and help you avoid conditions that might put you in violation of state or federal laws or endanger yourself or others while on the water.

Vessel Examiner Bill Tower affixes the Safety Check decal after confirming that the boat has all required items.

An example of some of the items checked include:

  • Life jackets (PFD)
  • Registration and numbering
  • Navigation lights
  • Proper engine ventilation
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Distress signals (flares, horn, etc.)
  • Backfire flame control
  • Battery cover and connections

All of these items are currently required by state and federal laws and, if missing or non-operating, can result in a citation if your vessel is stopped and inspected by the Coast Guard or state marine enforcement facility.

After your boat has been checked, you may receive recommendations about safety issues. But no penalities will be assessed.

If your boat successfully meets all requirements, you will be presented with an official Vessel Safety Check decal that shows your commitment to safety.

The Vessel Safety Check gives you a risk-free way to ensure that you meet the legal minimums and to potentially avoid a citation.
